On 26 May 2012, the Sea Point branch of Lions Clubs International together with Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa held a meal packaging event at the Sea Point Methodist Church. 35 volunteers packaged 5 400 meals for preschool feeding programmes in under-resourced areas of Cape Town.
Sylvia Walters of the Lions Club of Sea Point: “Lions Clubs International has a long history in helping to provide food to the needy. Through our willing band of volunteers committed to our motto ‘We Serve’, we hope to help make a difference to the lives and tummies of needy children in our City.”
The programme aims to deliver more than a food “hand out”, but aims also to help empower principals and teachers running theses preschools with a “hand up” as well.
“For each box of food worth R400 we give to a preschool, we require them to spend a minimum of R100 on the savings of the money parents give in fees towards improving their facilities,” says Nathan van Niekerk, Western Cape Branch Manager of Stop Hunger Now. “In doing so, we move from a culture of dependency and entitlement to one where communities show that they can use support from donors to improve their circumstances.”
